The cover shows a painting by Paul Klee. The title comes from a poem by Dylan Thomas. Most of the poems are formal in style, although the rhymes are as often slant as regular. This post presents three poems from the book.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p><p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This poem is about a mother comforting her child<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:130px;\"><strong>Hush<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:100px;\">A mother picks<br \/>\nUp her fussy child<br \/>\nAnd slowly rocks<br \/>\nFrom side to side<br \/>\nGently jogging<br \/>\nUp and down<br \/>\nThrice each swing<br \/>\nAbove the ground<br \/>\nLightly patting<br \/>\nBaby\u2019s back<br \/>\nWith a descant<br \/>\nMelody<br \/>\nThat finds a meter<br \/>\nFor the why<br \/>\nAnd resolves the need<br \/>\nTo cry.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The following poem is about a photogravure of the ruins of Jedburgh Abbey (below). One can see through the photographer the outline of the grave before which he stands.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/creatureandcreator.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/blog-jedburgh.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4315\" src=\"https:\/\/creatureandcreator.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/blog-jedburgh.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"766\" height=\"963\" srcset=\"https:\/\/creatureandcreator.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/blog-jedburgh.jpg 1658w, https:\/\/creatureandcreator.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/blog-jedburgh-239x300.jpg 239w, https:\/\/creatureandcreator.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/blog-jedburgh-814x1024.jpg 814w, https:\/\/creatureandcreator.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/blog-jedburgh-768x966.jpg 768w, https:\/\/creatureandcreator.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/blog-jedburgh-1221x1536.jpg 1221w, https:\/\/creatureandcreator.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/blog-jedburgh-1629x2048.jpg 1629w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 766px) 100vw, 766px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:80px;\"><strong>Francis Frith at Jedburgh<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:50px;\">In the early days of photography,<br \/>\nand ever since, to catch a light that&#8217;s low<br \/>\nor change a sparkle into sheen,<br \/>\nthe exposure of the film was very slow,<br \/>\nand in this passing time the photographer<br \/>\ncould come into the field of view<br \/>\nand wait unmoving for a while, before<br \/>\ncovering the lens to start anew.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nThe walking-in and walking-out were all<br \/>\ntoo fast to cause a lasting trace<br \/>\nupon the film, but the standing still<br \/>\nwould leave upon the record of the place<br \/>\na clear, faint outline of the person,<br \/>\nthrough whose quiet transparency<br \/>\nthe ruined abbey, in all its undone<br \/>\ntruthfulness, we now can see.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nThe roof is open to the sky, the walls<br \/>\narrayed in sunlight, a grassy floor<br \/>\nnow covers the crumbled tiles,<br \/>\nand through the camera&#8217;s open door<br \/>\nthe old light of graves and broken stone<br \/>\ntakes through time a gentle passage<br \/>\nthrough the fading record of the man<br \/>\nwho caught himself within his image.<br \/>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The following sonnet is about the meeting in Emmaus after the crucifixion between two disciples and someone who they thought was Jesus (<em>Luke<\/em> 24:13-32)<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:120px;\"><strong>Emmaus<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:50px;\">I am not the one who died upon the cross \u2013<br \/>\nYou really do not recognize me.<br \/>\nThat easy way to remedy your loss<br \/>\nIs just what your sorrow wants to see.<br \/>\nLook not for miracles to stop your grief \u2013<br \/>\nDeath is not followed by resurrection,<br \/>\nAnd mystery is not solved by false belief.<br \/>\nYou heard him clearly say that \u201cIt is done.\u201d<br \/>\nWe should simply remember what he taught:<br \/>\nI fill with wine our glasses to the brim<br \/>\nAnd new bread now break for us to eat;<br \/>\nBlessed be our life, though it be far too short.<br \/>\nAnd if you truly would remember him,<br \/>\nLove each and every one that you will meet.<br \/>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If you wish to obtain a physical copy of this book, I can send you one for 10 CAD (mainly to cover mailing costs) if you give me your mailing address.
