Gary Snyder (1930- ) worked on the collection of 39 poems entitled Mountains and Rivers without End from 1956 to 1996. The first poem in the final published sequence was written in 1995: Endless Streams and Mountains. This describes a hand scroll created in the first half of the 12th Century by an unknown Chinese painter, and now in the Cleveland Museum of Art. The painting provides a view of the world wherein human beings are an integral part of a vast spiritual landscape. The photograph of Snyder (from the book’s dust jacket) is by Dianna Smith (1995?)
